the bunker

You're prepared to die - perhaps you're about to get killed at night, watching your killers' eyes grow gradually more and more unfocused, or perhaps you're snatched out of your car after the vote. But you don't. Instead, the world starts spinning and then everything goes black.

You come to standing upright in a decontamination shower. Step out of the shower, and you'll find a towel and a set of folded clothes. Outside the shower room is a hallway of numbered doors, each which is heavy and may only be opened by turning a wheel, and each containing a simple cot, sink, and toilet. Instead one of these doors, you'll find a box containing some of your personal items.

Besides the many doors to rooms, the building you're in has a large storage area stocked with canned and dried food and more bottled water. There's only a single, tiny stove to cook on, but there is a large amount of gasoline stockpiled for it. There are no windows here, and it's dark, only dimly lit by sparse electric lighting.

At the end of the hall is a control room, with comfortable chairs to sit in and a screen from which the park can be monitored. There is actually, in a chest left behind in this room, some expensive vodka and snacks. You can watch what is happening back in the park. One thing is clear - everyone believes you to be dead, but that corpse they're looking at is not yours.

That's a lot better than most people took it...

[Edea will offer Kurapika a small smile as he appears.]

But -- what happened? Don't tell me all of this is from...

It seems what they said was true...at least, in a sense. [He winces as he settles back against the wall, not actually moving away to walk towards her. The leg was bothering him enough that he didn't want to walk on it just yet.]

That "ride" they put me in. I wish they had chose something less...brutal. [It's not exactly that he's forgiven them, but he's too exhausted and relieved to be alive to be angry right now.]

Oh, gods.

[Edea will step forward and get on one knee to try and assess how bad the leg is.]

We have to try to stop this before it gets any worse. I'm so sorry.

...If you haven't understood already, they're being controlled. ...We believe that the only way to escape that park is to be 'killed' and that none of it is real.

[When she inspects his leg, Kurapika simply reassures her, lifting up his pantsleg to show the bandages there.] It's fine... When I woke up, somebody had already taken care of it.

[It still hurt, but it should heal. That's what he hoped, anyway.] Edea, you were one of them. Let me ask you one thing, then. If you all believed that the only way out was to be killed...

[He brings a hand up to cover a nasty bruise on his face. There's a small flash of anger, but it's more contain than usual.] Then why like this? There's better ways...quicker ways!

[The question will elicit a slight groan. This was what bothered her the most still.]

...Because we were told that saving you would be much harder if we did it quickly and quietly. I have no doubt... that Crocs is still telling them this same thing. Each night, I think, he presses for more.

[He drops hand and rests it over his knees, trying to get comfortable.]

Despicable... It looks like I was after the wrong people all along, if you're telling the truth. [He hasn't seen a debriefing yet, so he should get some leeway there. The only reason he (tentatively) believes Edea now is because there's so much that isn't adding up. Like the scars on their heads, and the way Ciel and Anise had acted.] Who's Crocs?

I had said on the first day that we needed to make sure we remembered who our true enemy was... I did not yet realize then the role they had planned for me. But it remains all the more true even now.

Crocs is a... picture of a crocodile. That's how they communicated with us.

Now that we're here, we may finally be able to do that.

[He pauses, raising his eyebrows at her.] What's a crocodile?

An animal with a lot of teeth.

[A slight shrug.]

We don't have them where I'm from either, although we have monsters a little like that...

That's good enough. I take it it's something that's meant to look threatening, at any rate.

[He is basically imagining a fluffy hulking mammal with shark teeth right now.]

When they spoke to you, did it sound like they were just behind the picture, or was it just a speaker?

No, of course they weren't hiding behind a picture. It was through one of those voice transmitters that the park uses to make announcements.

[Hey you...you never know, okay. Kurapika lets out a restless sigh.]

I guess that would have been too easy. Too bad... It looks like we'll have to find them the hard way.

...It will be more satisfying, anyway.

[Her tone is slightly grim. Kurapika shouldn't doubt what she intends to do if she does find the people responsible for this.]

It doesn't matter to me how we get there, as long as we do. I won't let anyone else suffer through what we have.

[Kurapika seems to take absolutely no satisfaction out of this. There's only anger.]

On that... we're agreed.

[A slight pause.]

...I did mean everything I said the first day, you know. The brainwashing hadn't kicked in yet then. But... perhaps it should have been directed at these people all along.

Don't worry. [He closes his eyes, just another sign of the exhaustion he was feeling.]

I believe you. There's no reason for you to lie now. If you did, it would be incredibly short-sighted.
