There's no way to mark the passage of time after lights out, but it isn't long before the lightbulb in your bedroom flickers back to life. In K's room, the panel with the cartoon animal painted on your wall slides up to reveal a hidden screen behind it; it has the look of the like a slot machine. In Kaoru's room, the door unlocks and a path leading to K's quarters lights up with a dim glow. Any attempts to veer off this path or approach any other room will cause his bracelet to start beeping rapidly. For tonight, K's door will unlock to Kaoru and Kaoru only.

You'll have to make an important decision tonight, and quickly; you only have an hour to decide before the power abruptly goes off again.

[Each time you look at the screen in your wall, a smiling cartoon animal says, in a robotic voice: ]

Congratulations, K and Kaoru Hitachiin! You have been chosen to be the Conversion Busters! As conversion busters, your job is to prevent them from becoming VIPs! Please choose which player you will protect.

Any questions?

[On the first night, instead of its usual speech, the cartoon animal says: ]

Congratulations, K and Kaoru! You will get to play in an exciting and special game! Each night, a group of our special VIP guests will meet and decide to kill someone. Every day, the other guests will attempt to discover the identities of these VIP guests and execute one of them!

You have been given a special role to help protect your team! Would you like to learn more? By the way, you don't need to pick anyone tonight.

[Interesting. Conversion Buster...it's a silly name, but important. Especially if everyone chooses not to vote tomorrow -- then the VIPs can convert someone into their group. But something seems to be left out of the explanation, so he'll approach a question.]

I do have a question, actually. Would we be made aware if our so called "busting" was successful? For example: the VIPs choose someone to convert and we choose that same person to protect. Would we be told that we prevented a conversion?

Nope! That's the detective's job!

I see. That makes things more difficult. [A sigh.] Very well. A second question: can we vote together to protect one buster, or can we only protect someone aside from ourselves.

You can protect yourselves if you want to!

[Kaoru's pretty tense and pale—the seriousness of the situation is still taking its toll on him. He does relax a little as the role they've been given is explained though.]

It'd be a shot in the dark picking someone tonight anyway . . . but it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.

I suppose not. At the very least we can see how this works first-hand as a test.

Kaoru, if we are to work together for the foreseeable future I think we should be open and honest with one another. Does that sound fair to you?

I guess . . . if we don't want to get in each other's way. Is there anything specific you want to know first?

Firstly, is there anyone you know here? I noticed there are some people who were brought here in groups, so I'd like to know if that's a situation you are in.

As for me, I have come with one man -- Sigma. However he does not remember who I am, so I am hesitant to put trust in him.

[He likes Sigma, don't get him wrong, but if Sigma doesn't know or trust him then allying with him may not be the smartest decision.]

I have four friends here; Tamaki, Kyouya, Mori, and Honey. They all remember me, and there's no way they'd do anything to hurt me no matter what role they have.

[He hesitates a moment, considering something.]

. . . Even if you don't trust that guy, we can avoid voting on him . . . If he's a friend of yours then you still want to protect him, right?

Yes. I do want to protect Sigma. However if he cannot trust me, then I do not know how much trust I can afford to give to him.

[That's just his view on it. If Sigma is a VIP and doesn't consider him important enough to protect, then K could be in danger.]

In any case if you truly trust your friends to that degree, I want you to do me a favor: let them know that I am your partner. If you feel as though they care for your safety regardless of role, it's important that they take my safety into consideration as well due to the buddy system.

[That is to say, if K dies then Kaoru dies too. If they want to keep Kaoru safe, they will also keep him safe as an extension of that.]

Ah—[He nods sharply. That makes a lot of sense . . . Why hadn't he thought of it first?]

Yeah. I'll tell them.

Thank you. However, I suggest you refrain from mentioning our role. If asked just say you are a normal guest. If they are VIPs they may be inclined to convert us after all.

[Or rather, convert Kaoru and then kill him as the remaining Buster. He doesn't want to risk that.]

I definitely won't go that far. Not unless we can confirm they're working on our side.

I'm glad you understand. I know it's hard to be dishonest with friends, but we must also look out for ourselves.

[Not that K would know about being dishonest with friends -- he has none that he can remember.]

All of that aside, is there anything you would like to ask of me?

Right now . . . I really only want to know whether or not you're a robot.

Oh, is that all? The answer is no. I am a man trapped inside a robot suit. There is a lock on the back of my head to open the suit, but I don't have the key.

. . . Then how do you eat?

The thin portion of metal vents near my mouth. I cut the food into small enough pieces to push through and then catch it. I've thought about how to go about this in detail, Kaoru.

That's . . . I can't even make fun of that. It's just sad.

I thank you for the sympathy, but you needn't worry for me. I have adapted into this suit well enough and it is not a priority for me to get out of it right now.

[Besides, maybe it could help him avoid being killed if it can't be broken through? He can't count on that however.]

Tell me, what are your friends like? If we have time to talk, we should become well acquainted. I fear that when the day comes we may need to keep some measure of distance in public, so no one catches on to us being buddies.

Ah . . . they're all good guys. Tamaki believes there's good in everyone. He's . . . He's not going to want to hurt anyone. Honey-senpai is friendly and cute, easy to dismiss, but he's actually really smart. He and Mori-senpai are both skilled fighters too. They've both won countless competitions, but I don't know how useful that will be here . . .

Kyouya's the last one, and he's the smartest of us all. He's very observant and good at analyzing, so he's the one I'll trust the most when it comes to judging people here.

[Tamaki, Honey, Mori and Kyouya. He'll have to go through their profiles later to get a better idea of what they can do.]

Can you imagine any of them ever wanting to kill someone? Or do you think they aren't the types who would endeavor toward such criminal behavior?

[Practically bristling at the suggestion.]

None of them would even dream of it! I'm the worst of all of us, and the worst I've ever done is still just normal schoolyard fighting and pranks. Anything more than that is unthinkable.

I see. If that's how you feel, then I will trust your judgment. You know them better than I do after all.

[And he hopes Kaoru is right about that. K really doesn't want any killings to happen, but the VIPs may feel different.]

As for me, you should also know that I have retrograde amnesia. It means I don't remember anything about my past, including my own name. "K" is just the name I gave myself. While I don't think it important for the game, I do want to be honest with you and everyone else on that front.

You . . . seriously? Is it because of what they did—?

[He gestures nervously at the stitches in his head to get his meaning across]

If that's all, then please pick out one of your friends for tonight!

Hello Kaoru. It seems tonight we'll have to decide on who to protect from a potential conversion. Before I make my suggestions, do you have any of your own?

Obviously one of my friends. I'm worried the VIPs are being forced to choose people to kill . . . I don't want one of them to wind up in that position. Suggesting all four of them is a lot though, so if I had to choose one it'd be Kyouya. He's the smartest of all of us, so if the VIPs wanted to get someone good at strategy on their side it would be him.

I see. I must be honest however -- if one of your friends is or will become a VIP, it would actually be more advantageous for us in staying alive. After all, they may feel inclined to not cause us any harm and sway the other VIPs to think the same. If our goal is to stay alive, it would be smarter to let one of them be converted.

[And the award for "person with the least social tact" goes to...]

—What the hell are you suggesting?! I'm not going to traumatize them for my own sake! I'd rather be converted myself!

Then I suppose we shouldn't protect ourselves tonight, just in case the VIPs select us. Ah ha ha.

...I am sorry Kaoru. I understand your feelings, but it's the truth. If we are to stay alive in this game, one of your friends being a VIP would ultimately be more in our favor than against. My meeting with them made me feel certain that they would not choose to kill you and look out for your well-being more than anything else.

[Kaoru's expression has evened out, but he doesn't actually seem any less angry. The corner of his mouth twists in a frown of distaste.]

I don't care. I won't do that to them. If you can convince me someone else is more likely to be converted than Kyouya, then I'll consider it, but there is no chance I'll choose someone else for such a disgusting reason.

[A sigh.]

Very well then. What about Levi? Whether or not his claim is the truth, he may be a target tonight for conversion. If we have no better options, it may be better to be safe than sorry.

[Huffs softly, still pretty irate, but he's considering the suggestion.]

He's . . . I think he's telling the truth about being the detective. To be the only person going against an otherwise unanimous vote says a lot. Why would the VIP take such a huge risk to convince us this early? They could get by fine just laying low for a while longer.

I won't argue against protecting him tonight. Hopefully the medical team will protect him from being killed too.

Yes. As much I dislike his foolishness, I think it's safe to say without much contention that he is the detective. The fact that he is without buddy makes him claim more credible -- his vote was the only one and nobody else voted for Legion.

Right, no chances it's a pair of VIP trying to cover their tracks. So we'll protect him tonight?

Yes. While I feel it would be too obvious a move for the VIPs to convert him, to the point that they will likely not take the risk of doing it, I will feel much safer knowing he could not be converted.

You should probably stop talking if you don't want me to change my mind.

[He pauses for a moment, not sure how to react, but gives Kaoru a thumbs up to indicate he gets the message.]

Much better.

Take a break, you two! You don't need to protect anyone tonight.
